this city was #1 on my list* (as my friend from scotland said, i'm "making my way west, like the pioneers"), which is why i decided to be outrageous and visit in 11 degree weather (although it had to be less with the wind chill) and see just how bad midwest winters are...they're pretty bad.
i'm not sure how much the weather was to blame, but i had a hard time getting a feel for the city (and my feet, for that matter). i also realized that i was comparing everything to new york in my head. on the other hand, the architecture was amazing and the chicagoans we met were personable and friendly (e.g., offering to play tour guide, apologizing for the weather, etc.). so while chicago hasn't slipped from its position on the list, the jury's still out...i think i'll go back for another visit when it's a little warmer.
*the short list:
1) chicago
2) seattle
3) san francisco
