there are very few bands that i would go see alone. i mostly go to shows in the company of friends or not at all. thankfully, deerhoof is a band that i wanted to see badly enough to go solo, in decidedly suboptimal concert going temperatures.
last night's sold out show was a magical ending to a crappy week (full of plans that fell through at the last minute, subway doors that shut in my face, and just the overall misery that comes with chill january wind and smears itself across people's faces). so although i missed camera obscura because my bravado is only enough to get me through one show per week by myself, deerhoof was all pleasure and joy (holding back the bleakness for a brief moment).
dare i call satomi cute? i guess since i can't think of a more fitting term (adorable?), i will. she hops like a bunny, or like a bird (only animal metaphors come to mind, reinforced by songs like "panda panda panda"), and her arm movements are mechanical and fluttery in turn, but all quirkily appropriate. her childlike voice binds the music together, high above the frenetic drumming (greg played a hole in the bass drum, but phew, on they went) and john's mesmerizing, crashing guitar.
so glad i got to experience the magic that is deerhoof.

My friends are tired of shows half the time too. I wish I could have been there. I still haven't gotten to see them. Something catastrophic always happens on my way. So now it has become a bit of a pipe dream...
