when there's nothing to say....

at an event the other night, i ran into a girl i had not seen in six months. i always felt a little awkward whenever i talked to her, and i think we had our most awkward conversation yet. 

here's how it went.

me: how's the wedding planning going? or did you already get married?

she: um, he left me. he packed everything up and walked out on me one night.

me: oh no! i'm sorry to hear that....how's the job going? weren't you starting a new one the last time i saw you?

she: i got laid off...about a week after i started.

me: man, that's rough. (pause). so...terrible weather outside, eh?
