new orleans, five years later

i think i left a piece of my heart down in new orleans.

it's the part that wants to sit on a porch swing and drink moscow mules all evening, under a ceiling painted the color of heaven.

the part that appreciates the wait that comes after the question "how're y'all doing now?" and perfect, piping hot beignets to eat wherever, whenever.

the part that felt freedom in the way a gospel choir sang and danced, even in that sweltering heat, and in how miss donna delighted in her "beautiful" bathroom, now painted "sexy pink."

the part that ached for miss bonnie and her empty shell of a house, which we did the best we could to fix up, but had such a long way to go, and on such little cash.

the part that saw a city's enduring spirit amidst overgrown weeds in the lower 9th and in a group of men who sat on porch steps that led to nowhere.

there is still so much to be done.
