on manners

instead of doing the usual out-of-the-way-before-the-doors-close-on-me shove or the you're-too-slow-therefore-i'll-go-first move (old ladies and children are not exempt from these two actions), i waited for someone else to step into the elevator before getting on. in return i got a friendly smile and a warm "thank you." it's been a while since i've heard those two words uttered in the course of my day...then again it's been a while since i've let anybody else go first.

i know! the fact that i remember vividly words like "thank you" and "hello" from strangers testifies to the rarity of such communications. it's hard to be kind when it's not appreciated, when nobody seems to notice and when people were going to do whatever it took to get what they wanted anyway. hard to still want to be caring...
