of my first marathon!
pre-start: so this is staten island. uhoh...serious mayhem at baggage trucks.
the start: no idea where i'm supposed to be. how about i just scoot in right here.
mile 1: verrazano-narrows bridge--feels like we're on top of the world.
mile 2: cramps...
mile 3: ...not going away...
mile 4: to the man in bayridge who was handing out bananas..thank you!
mile 7: familiar territory...and familiar faces! thank goodness for friends (mel and olive, marathon groupies)!
mile 8-9: checking out neighborhoods...cute!
mile 10: not so cute
mile 12: trip (over nothing but the ground) and fall, no, skid flat on my face...
mile 15: completely miss marris and erin while preparing to go on scary looking bridge
mile 16: come out of the bridge downhill, greeted by manhattan welcome signs and loud first ave crowds=feeling good!
mile 17: starting to feel not so good...as if on cue, karen and maureen appear! hooray!
mile 18: yell my coworker's name at the powerbar gel station as i go by...she's not paying attention.
mile 20-21: less crowds up here
mile 23: not seeing any friends (next year i'm writing my name all over my shirt).
mile 24: finally in central park (with gel #7 in hand)
mile 26: sprinting
.2: slowing...800 meters to go?! i always forget that...trying to sprint...again.
the finish line!
off to get bloody knees cleaned up...
the day after:
roommate bursts out laughing as she sees me hobble upstairs like an old woman (and yes, while clutching the railing). it hurts to even look at stairs.

YEAH!!!! Go Mare Bear! I was thinking about you as I watched Paula Radcliff crossing the finish line. The marathon, and whatever you did to get through it,will be your metaphor for success in so many areas of life. CONGRATS on a job well done!
you are AMAZING for having finished this feat. i admire you for your determination! i hope your co-workers like you now, by the way. your food sure wins me over every time. how 'bout some guac?
