good things about being vegan:
- i always read labels now. i can't believe how many disgusting artificial ingredients and chemicals are in our food...and how much of that stuff i was eating.
- baked goods used to be its own food group. now i stay away...yay for eliminating trans fats from my diet!
- i eat tons more fruit and vegetables, whereas previously they were just an afterthought (as in, i'll get to it after i eat my cupcakes and brownies and cookies).
- i feel like i'm doing the planet some good. i've also never considered myself an animal rights person (or even an animal lover), but reading about the way our food is raised now makes me shudder....
bad things about being vegan:
- the moment people hear the word 'vegan' they think i've gone completely nuts. maybe i have, a little.
- the next time someone asks me, "where do you get your protein?" i think i might have to smack them on the head. meat is not the only source of protein, people. and the health crises in this country come from getting too much protein, not too little.
- potlucks and catered meetings (basically any gathering where food is involved) are hard. i have to remember to bring food with me wherever i go.
- fresh produce does not keep as long as processed food. if i don't cook everything right away, it all goes bad (as i learned soon enough after discovering my moldy eggplant and yellowing kale).
i'm thinking of continuing on down this vegan path for now. we'll see if it really is a lifestyle change or just another one of my phases.

you never cease to impress me, marebear. i love how open you are to experiencing new ways of life. when i was in my first trimester or two of pregnancy i was vegan and i loved it. i felt better physically alsand o spiritually. like i could stare a fish in the eye and say "yeah, we may be different but we're both living on the same planet and i'm not gonna hurt you". i know, that was weird. i felt much more connected to all beings and creatures. it was cool. too bad it's so "inconvenient" though. im a lameo and eat some white meat these days. i totally encourage you to keep going with this as long as it feels right though. go marebear!!!
ahh, i lasted for one week and i thought of you a lot! i know you are a vegan at heart :) i totally understand what you mean about feeling connected. it's a wider consciousness than just 'i' and 'me'--a less selfish way of thinking. i found myself thinking about the planet instead. anyway, i think i'll be vegan every other week (or every few weeks), and veggie the rest of the time. that seems to work for me! thanks for the encouragement!
